A great way to see New Hampshire is by taking a drive through one of the many back roads or scenic highways winding through the state. These drives allow us to see small towns and experience many different walks of life. But, sticking to the roads doesn’t always mean the best views. For those, we’ve come to appreciate the historic trains here in New Hampshire. Today we’re telling you about one of our favorites!

Our favorite way to see the landscape of New Hampshire is by hopping on one of the historic train excursions departing from the 1874 train station in North Conway Village.

The Conway Scenic Railroad operates a variety of excursions ranging in length from 11 miles to 50. Each one is designed to give passengers the experience of riding on a heritage train while seeing the beauty of the New Hampshire landscape pass by.

We recommend the 21-mile Bartlett Excursion Train which offers nearly 2 hours of beauty.

The trip leaves from the station in North Conway before traveling through the Saco River Valley on its way to Bartlett.

The trip includes views of expansive fields and beautiful forests. It even crosses over the East Branch, Saco, and Ellis Rivers.

When the train pulls into the station at Bartlett passengers can watch as it’s turned around on tracks for the return trip. Those who love trains and how they operate will especially love this part!

There are a few different seating options to choose from. Coach is lovely, offering plenty of room and lots of window views.

There are also private compartment cars that hold up to four passengers. Because you’ll be sitting with your own group, masks can be removed in these cars.

First class offers just a bit more room with the same wonderful views.

The views are incredible no matter where you sit, but for an extra-special experience choose a weekend trip in April, May, November, or December on the Dorthea Mae’s upper dome seating. These seats allow for the best views in all directions.

The trips take place throughout the year and each season offers something special. That means repeat visits are almost necessary!
