The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center in Scarborough offers one of the most beautiful ways to learn more about the landscape and ecology of Maine.

The center is located right at the banks of the marsh, which is the largest salt water marsh in the state.

The area is believed to have been used first by the Sokokis Indians. European settlers arrived in the 1600s and used the marsh area to harvest salt hay to feed their cattle.

Over the years the marsh has been used for many purposes, but in 1957 the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife began the process of acquiring the marsh and in 1972 the nature center came to be.

The nature center offers canoe and kayak rentals for visitors to explore the marsh. They also offer organized tours throughout the season.

Visitors can also access the marsh with their own kayak, which is great for those who are comfortable on their own.

The wildlife here is everywhere and it’s fun to keep watch for an unexpected friend. The marsh provides an important habitat for birds and it’s not uncommon to see visitors with cameras and long lenses trying to capture an image.
