Nestled within Jennings County, there’s a pleasant little slice of paradise that’s perfect for nature lovers and hikers. It’s not terribly enormous, at just 179 acres in size, but there is plenty of amazing natural beauty packed into the space from end to end. It’s easily one of the Hoosier State’s most underrated little oases, and we feel like it definitely deserves more love than it often gets. Take a relaxing walk around the Calli Nature Preserve in Indiana, and learn what it really means to appreciate the magnificent world around us.

From the moment you first set foot on the grounds of Calli Nature Preserve, you’ll probably feel two things: awe at just how beautiful it is, and relief that you’ve made it to such a wondrous little place.

This particular tract of land was, once upon a time, a gift from a man by the name of Dr. James Calli.

Chris Suda/AllTrails The preserve is named after Dr. Louis J. Calli, Sr., who, at many times during his career as a physician was the only practicing doctor in Jennings County.

Calli retired in 1998, after many decades of service to the people of Jennings County, Indiana.

David Pankoke/AllTrails Today, visitors are treated to an impressive array of different natural attractions throughout the preserve.

One of the first things many people notice is the vibrant wildflowers that seem to coat the entire area at certain times of year.

Management/TripAdvisor The tract of land making up the preserve also features remarkable limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and forestry, including a hemlock stand.

Interestingly, Calli Nature Preserve is home to some pretty rare species of plants as well.

David Pankoke/AllTrails There are many kinds of critters that call the preserve home, too, like red-shouldered hawks, which are truly interesting to observe in their natural habitat. You’ll also occasionally encounter geese, ducks, various types of fish, and plenty more.

If you so desire, you can take yourself on a guided self-tour of the grounds, where you’ll likely learn plenty of interesting new things.

Jenn King/AllTrails There’s something magical about learning about the world around us, and the Calli Nature Preserve in Indiana is an excellent place to do so. We have no doubt you’ll be as enchanted by it as we are, especially if you visit during spring, summer, or autumn.
