This is a Connecticut hike that’s fantastic any time of year, but we couldn’t miss featuring it in the fall. Wadsworth Falls State Park has a number of great hikes, but one of our favorites is the Mattabesett and Mount Higby Trail. This is a moderately difficult trail with phenomenal views. You’ll have such a great vantage point to see the autumn hues of the changing leaves. It’s a perfect way to get some exercise while viewing fall foliage in Connecticut. The Constitution State is a beautiful place in the fall, and this hike really does a great job of showing off our amazing scenery.
Mount Higby is just under 900 feet, and it’s extremely wide (three miles at the widest point). It’s part of the Metacomet Ridge that spans southern New England. You’ll have incredible views for miles.

The hike is a bit of a trek. It’s just under nine miles, but the terrain is fairly easy with only a few overly rocky spots.

There are plenty of cliffs to give you a great view of the autumn hues sweeping over the valley below. An October visit is ideal because the leaves will be at their peak.

Connecticut is famous for its fall foliage, and this trail will give you a bird’s eye view of the changing leaves.

Since it’s an out and back trail, you don’t have to hike the full distance. Many turn around after the first mile or two: you still get some great views and it’s not as strenuous.

There are quite a few high peaks and rocky areas, so make sure to be cautious and not get too close to ledges!
