Within Red Top Mountain State Park, there is a beautiful woodland trail that wanders around in a loop along north Lake Allatoona. This wonderful hike offers a glimpse into nature that is filled with towering trees, wildflowers in bloom, and so much more. But what’s even cooler is that this trail gets its name, Homestead Trail, from the ruins of an old cabin that once existed in the area. All that’s left of the homestead is a chimney and concrete drive, and yet, the ruins of what once was adds a bit of mystery and history to the hike.

The Homestead Trail in Georgia is a five-mile loop that takes hikers through the forests, banks of Lake Allatoona, and past old homestead ruins.

The trail will wind through some of the most naturally beautiful areas of the park, and in fact, nearly half of the entire trek will follow the lakeshore.

The name of the trail is from the ruins that still remain in the park from one of several full-fledged homesteads from years ago.

The ruins of the old homestead date back to the 1940s, with the chimney and concrete drive being all that is left.

There are other trails that connect with the Homestead Trail that hikers can use to extend their walk through nature. For instance, you can return back and take the Sweet Gum Trail to make a double loop!

Also, keep in mind this is one of the more popular hikes that allow dogs, so make sure to bring your fur friends along on a leash!
