From coastal paths to woodland hikes, Rhode Island has its fair share of gorgeous trails. To help you discover new places for your next outdoor adventure, today’s featured hike takes you on a delightful forested journey. The King/Benson Preserve Trail is an enchanting walk any time of the year.

The King/Benson Trail takes you through not one but two wonderful land trust properties that are adjacent to one another. At just over 3 miles, this trail will take you on a journey of varied sights that never grow old.

AllTrails

Hike through the Benson Preserve out to the Narrow River, part of the King Preserve, the newest of the Nature Conservancy’s properties. Enjoy a small beach with water views of the inland estuary.

The trail is very shady making for a cooler hike. Lush fern forests grow in places under the forest canopy.

A small waterfall and wetland areas are delightful surprises along the trail. Strap on your boots after heavy rains, the trails can can be muddy after a lot of precipitation.

Traverse boardwalk footbridges over water features as you make your way through the woodlands. Dogs are welcome to accompany you on the trail as long as they are leashed and you clean up after your furry friend.

Pay attention to the little details, you’ll encounter interesting plant life and mushrooms growing within the preserve. Bring your camera, there are plenty of photo worthy scenes to capture.

Our favorite part of this trail is the grove of spruce trees that become a magical tree tunnel as you make your way beneath the towering canopy. It doesn’t get much more storybook setting than this!
