Have you ever stumbled across a tourist trap that looks cool, but doesn’t really have a purpose? This is a beautiful scene, but not something you might recognize as belonging to Nebraska from a simple glance or a photo. Is that a lighthouse in the distance? Though it has historic value, this oddly landlocked lighthouse is mostly a novelty. A cool one, but it seems to be just for tourists these days, nonetheless.

Some attractions are honestly worth a visit, but this odd pillar at the edge of the water in landlocked Nebraska.

The base of this looming lighthouse was built in 1938 as a gas station, and the tower was added just a year later. Inside, there are 10 floors, but it was just built for novelty originally.

However, the lighthouse was used as if it was a real lighthouse for years, with a bright beacon shining out over the water each night. After WW2 ended, the beacon even flashed the morse code for “V” to stand for “victory” in celebration.

After years of disrepair, it was eventually abandoned, leaving it to be bought along with the nearby RV park and used by travelers passing through.

Today, though it still stands 110 feet tall, it stands alone and quiet, closed to the public. Once a maritime themed destination, today it stands alone as a sole statue near the water.

Even if you can’t go inside or see the water from the top, it makes a pretty picture in photos. It might be worth a cool photo if you find yourself driving through the area sometime!
