Mount Hood Railroad was the first rail line south out of Hood River, and built in 1906.

The Union Pacific acquired the line in 1968 for fruit and lumber transportation; but, as local industries switched to truck-based transportation, freight on the Mount Hood line dwindled, and the Union Pacific proposed abandoning the railroad altogether.

But the Mount Hood Railroad, a route that traveled some of Oregon’s most scenic landscapes, was meant for bigger things.

So in 1987, a group of local investors purchased the railroad from Union Pacific, for the purpose of recreational rides.

Today, the Mount Hood Railroad offers a variety of excursions year-round, taking Oregonians through some of the most breathtaking areas around the Hood River Valley.

The railway offers some truly unique experiences, too; during the holiday season, the polar express expedition is absolutely magical.

There are also more adult-themed events, like murder mystery dinners and “Wild West” rides.
