A storefront on the main street of a small Nebraska town may seem like an odd place to find a world-class attraction of any sort. But the Museum of Shadows in Elmwood easily rivals any attraction of its kind, and it was recently named the #1 haunted attraction in Nebraska.
The Museum opened in September 2016 and has since enjoyed steady growth.
Facebook/Museum of Shadows Inside this innocuous storefront are scores of items with paranormal properties…
Facebook/Museum of Shadows Some are said to move on their own, change places in the middle of the night, or simply create an uneasy feeling in visitors. Each item has an informational sign next to it explaining its origins and the types of experiences others have described having with/near it.
Facebook/Museum of Shadows Many of the items have an “attached spirit,” which is sort of like being haunted. One specific item has to be kept in a glass case because anyone who touches it directly becomes physically ill. We won’t spoil the surprise with too many pictures of items in the museum - half of the fun is experiencing these things in person, whether it’s your first time or your tenth.
But the items inside are only one part of the incredibly spooky experience.
Facebook/Museum of Shadows Nate and Kaleigh Raterman, owners of the Museum of Shadows, also host paranormal investigations and ghost hunts in this 127-year-old building which is said to be haunted itself.
Facebook/Museum of Shadows Visitors have reported a variety of spooky experiences here, both during regular visits and during ghost hunts. Many have said that it’s even more thrilling than other popular attractions such as the Villisca Ax Murder House in Iowa.
Facebook/Museum of Shadows Items have moved on their own, people have felt hands touching or poking them, and full-body apparitions have been seen.
Facebook/Museum of Shadows Cameras trained on the ghost hunt areas have captured a wide variety of apparitions, both during ghost hunts and when the building is empty.
Facebook/Museum of Shadows Since the museum opened in late 2016, it has delighted and terrified guests - even those who come in with a fair amount of skepticism. One word of warning about this place: visitors have called it addictive. You can’t expect to see and experience everything on just one visit.
Most ghost hunts are a few hours long, but there are also some overnight events. But you don’t have to commit to a ghost hunt in order to experience the museum; you can simply visit to look at the spooky items and read their stories. Even if you arrive as a skeptic, you may find yourself leaving as a believer.
