Wenatchee is surrounded by natural beauty. Not only is it located in the picturesque Cascade Foothills, but the Columbia River flows right through it. And for nearly a century, local families have been coming to Ohme Gardens in Washington to take it all in. If you’ve never heard of the piece of paradise that spans 40 acres in the north-central area, allow us to introduce you.

The history of Ohme Gardens goes all the way back to 1929, when Herman Ohme purchased 40 acres of land.

Ohme Gardens / Facebook Herman and his new wife, Ruth, had plans to operate an orchard on the property.

But as the couple stood on their new rocky bluff with breathtaking views of the Cascade Mountains and the Columbia River Valley, they developed a different plan.

Alex Tucker / Google They worked tirelessly for years, planting and creating stone pathways to develop the gardens.

Before they eventually constructed their elaborate irrigation system, the Ohme family used to hand-water the gardens with five-gallon milk cans.

Ohme Gardens / Facebook The work was a true labor of love.

Initially, the property was only going to be used as a family retreat. But it wasn’t long before Herman and Ruth decided to open the gardens to the public.

management / TripAdvisor The couple continued to work on the gardens for 42 years, until Herman died at the age of 80.

In 1991, the Ohme family sold the gardens to Washington State Parks.

Ohme Gardens / Facebook It’s now run by Chelan County and used as a day-use park and special event space.

Here, there are views in every direction. You might see the snow-capped Cascades and then get a glimpse of the Columbia River.

TBearden / TripAdvisor The grounds themselves are beautiful, but the views from the bluff really make it spectacular.

The park has multiple ponds, pools, and waterfalls.

Molly S / TripAdvisor And while it’s now operated by the county, the team always has the goal of carrying out the Ohme family’s vision.

Needless to say, this is a very popular place to get married.

Ohme Gardens / Facebook You’ll also find yoga classes, movie nights, and concerts on the calendar in the summertime.

Imagine strolling through this place of tranquility.
