For those driving along Interstate 85 near Gaffney, South Carolina, the bizarre, head-turning roadside attraction known as The Peachoid draws attention each and every time you pass it. The enormous steel and concrete erection is actually a one million gallon water tower – in the shape of a giant peach.
Built in 1981, The Peachoid turns 40 this year, yet it feels to some like it’s been around forever.

It was crafted by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, who cleverly inserted a cleft into the peach’s backside.

Artist Peter Freudenberg is credited with masterfully painting The Peachoid to look like a perfectly plump, ripe, and ready to eat peach.

But why a peach? Afterall, isn’t our neighbor to the west known as the Peach State?

While that may be true, Georgia actually falls behind South Carolina in annual peach production each year. California is ranked number one in peach production. South Carolina, Georgia, and New Jersey respectively rank two, three, and four.
