Colorful wildflowers will soon cover the ground with the most beautiful blooms. One of the best spots to see this magnificent natural wonder is in Antelope Valley at the California Poppy Reserve. However, not every year produces abundant flowering poppy fields in Southern California. Depending on rain and some other factors, the blooms may be sparse and not as vibrant as a year with a super bloom. Regardless, visiting this reserve is still worthwhile for hiking along the trails, viewing wildlife, and seeing a variety of other wildflowers that grow across the fields. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll find during super bloom years at this stunning state park.

The flowering fields in Southern California are about to be in full bloom and you can see them for yourself in Antelope Valley just north of Los Angeles along the southern tip of the Mojave Desert.

In super bloom years, late February is usually when the poppy fields are packed with tiny buds just about to burst open. And, when they do, the colors are spectacular.

As we move into March, the colorful flowers may start to look like this as they blanket the ground with a vibrant hue of color.

Although each year is different, you can typically expect the wildflowers to be in bloom from March to mid-April, and sometimes heading into May. Make sure to plan your trip accordingly, but keep in mind that not all years produce a good bloom.

You’ll have an opportunity to take a walk through the fields to enjoy the flowers if they are in bloom. Make sure to stay on the trails so you don’t crush any of these beautiful flowers underfoot.

With over eight miles of trails to choose from, you’ll have plenty of areas to explore so you can view this colorful splendor.

As tempting as it may be, the flowers in the poppy reserve cannot be plucked. These flowers are for everyone to enjoy so keeping the colorful fields alive with flowers is imperative. But you can always take pictures. And there’s no doubt the photos you will capture of this heavenly destination will be quite divine.
