The Steep Rock Summit In Ct Has A View You Ll Add To Your Bucket List

It’s the time of year to start planning future summer adventures and hiking fun. When you’re ready to hit the outdoors and hiking trails, you’ll want to visit Steep Rock Preserve. Each of the different trails is bound to lead you to through beautiful scenery every time. One of the best trails to visit will lead you to a gorgeous summit view that looks the same today as it did 100 years ago.

The hike to the summit is a pleasant 4.2-mile hike that the whole family can enjoy. The terrain is easy to moderate and offers beautiful views all year long. The best time to hike the trail is between March and October.

Follow the trail along the Shepaug River. The first mile of the trail is wide enough that many people enjoy taking this part of the trail on horseback.

After the one-mile mark, the path begins to narrow and become steeper. The incline isn’t too rough, though, so it is worth walking the path to reach the summit.

Considered the “core of the preserve,” this was the first land area of the preserve owned by the Steep Rock Association. The 100-acre area of land which includes the summit was given by Ehrick Rossiter.

You can expect to have a variety of family adventures every time you visit as you explore each of the different trails. Cross the suspension bridge and enjoy picturesque views of the Shepaug River, explore the historic Railroad Tunnel that was in service from 1872 to 1948, or visit the remains of the Holiday House.

The history and the chance to commune with nature is why it’s considered one of the best hikes in Connecticut. Be aware that the summit is closed at times throughout the year due to nesting.
