So much of Louisiana’s forested landscape is made up of beautiful longleaf pines, but did you know that they’re on the decline? Longleaf pine forests once covered nearly 90 million acres across the southeastern part of the country, but today there’s less than 5% remaining. The Nature Conservancy’s mission is to protect these important forests and restore eight million acres by 2025, and there’s one area near New Orleans that they protect that’s perfect for a day trip. Not only will you be surrounded by longleaf pines, but you might even come across a carnivorous plant or two. Not something you see every day! Let’s check it out.
Abita Creek Flatwoods is just one of the areas they protect, and there’s a lovely little trail that’s just perfect for an afternoon outing.
