Are you having a restless, sleepless night? Well, we may be able to help you stay up just a little bit longer, maybe even with the lights on. But that all depends on your scare threshold. When it comes to late-night stories about the paranormal, your imagination can go into overdrive and you may become irrationally scared at even the slightest disturbance around you. In any case, here are a few spooky places in Arizona that have been known to give people the creeps. Do you think you will be one of them? Here are some of the most terrifying places in Arizona.
- Big Nose Kate’s Saloon, Tombstone
zombieite/Flickr Being touched by a ghost is incredibly creepy and that’s exactly what has happened to a number of employees at this location. They have reported being pushed from behind only to find no one nearby. Whispers and footsteps from down in the basement have also been heard when no one is there and there have been phantom sightings as well. - The Bird Cage Theatre, Tombstone

brian wallace/Flickr Want to be followed home by a ghost? A few former employees of the Bird Cage have reported seeing and hearing ghosts inside this old saloon. While that’s creepy enough, some people have reported that ghosts have followed them home after a shift or a visit. No, thank you! Click here for more information on this terrifying place in Arizona.
- Gadsden Hotel, Douglas
Denver Gingerich/Flickr The spookiest feature of this historic hotel is Room 333, which is the one most reported with ghost sightings. However, these aren’t your rudimentary passive sightings either; former hotel guests have reported strange presences attempting to open the door, sitting on the bed, or even lying in bed with them. Yikes! Click here for more information on this terrifying place in Arizona.
- Ghost City Inn, Jerome
Clay Gilliland/Flickr Wait, do you hear that? Maybe it was just the wind… Some guests reported seeing doors slam shut suddenly and others have heard strange voices in otherwise empty areas. That’s enough to send shivers down your spine. Click here for more information on this terrifying place in Arizona.
- Lee Hotel, Yuma
Curtis Perry/Flickr This former hotel was built in 1917 is on the National Register of Historic Places. When this hotel was open, guests would get jostled awake in the middle of the night. The former (deceased) owner would reportedly attempt to check in on guests and this often included knocking on doors and rattling knobs. There were also three female ghosts that reportedly haunted the place.
- Jerome Grand Hotel, Jerome
Jason Shultz/Flickr This former state hospital is perhaps the most famous haunted place in the Grand Canyon State and is known for a huge number of ghostly sightings. Some of the spookier sightings include physical or audible presences that have no other reasonable explanation, such as suddenly unplugged appliances, electronics either malfunctioning or found in strange areas of the room, and sounds of sick people nearby. This is certainly one of the most haunted hotels in Arizona. Click here for more information on this terrifying place in Arizona.
- The Red Garter Inn, Williams
Wikimedia Commons There are some creepy Arizona ghost stories stemming from this establishment. However, its operators claim the inn is not as haunted as many folks claim but it’s hard to ignore personal accounts of ghostly activities. That includes having their sleep interrupted by slamming doors, shaking beds, or feeling a cold touch on their body. Click here for more information on this terrifying place in Arizona.
- Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park, Yuma
Austin Gruenweller/Flickr
Austin Gruenweller/Flickr Walking the grounds of an abandoned prison yard creates its own unease but the creepiest spot here is the Dark Cell, a room that was commonly used as punishment for unruly prisoners. Here, prisoners were either chained to the walls or the center of the room for days at a time. It is amazing how dark and isolated it feels within seconds of stepping over the threshold of the cell, even with dozens of other people standing outside the door. Plenty of other people have also talked about feeling nervous or anxious when walking into the Dark Cell for even a minute. Click here for more information on this terrifying place in Arizona.
So, which place do you think would be the spookiest to visit and would you want to go there? What other terrifying places in Arizona should be added to this list? Let us know in the comments!

Terrifying Places In Arizona March 13, 2021 Melissa Mahoney Can I visit any abandoned places in Arizona? It’s always quite a creepy thrill to explore abandoned places and Arizona has quite a few that you can visit. There’s a hike in the Hualapai Mountains that leads to an old abandoned Gold King Mansion which had provided accommodations for mineworkers at the time and was then abandoned in 1929 when mine operations ceased. Explore the rooms and halls of this historic building that was once teeming with life. If you want to see an old Route 66 roadside attraction that has been left to the elements, the Twin Arrow Trading Post with its massive iconic arrows sticking out of the ground is a fun stop to make. The trading post building is covered in graffiti but that will just make your photos all the more interesting. See this and others in our 10 Most Abandoned Places In Arizona post. Are there any haunted restaurants or bars in Arizona? Raise your hand if you want to dine with ghosts! With Jerome’s vast number of historic buildings, it’s unsurprising that the town also has a very haunted restaurant. The appropriately named Haunted Hamburger occupies the building of what was once a miners boarding house and it’s apparently haunted by several ghosts. Tools move, doors randomly shut, strange sounds can be heard, and images of ghosts will appear in photos. Casey Moore’s located in Tempe is considered one of the most haunted bars and restaurants in the country. It is said to be haunted by Casey Moore herself and guests have seen her apparition dancing around in clothes she would have worn when she was alive around the turn of the century. What haunted hotels can I stay at in Arizona? Aside from the hotels mentioned above, there are quite a few haunted hotels where you can spend the night. We can’t guarantee you will sleep if you choose to stay at one of them though. Head to Williams near the Grand Canyon and you will find the Grand Canyon Hotel that’s been around since 1892. This hotel showcases its historic memorabilia, has 29 uniquely themed rooms, and has several ghostly residents. You may hear whispers or a knock at the door in the middle of the night and you might see a ghost or some objects moving. Hotel Monte Vista in Flagstaff has had many reports of paranormal activity. This hotel has been around since 1927 and at least 12 different ghosts, both friendly and frightening, have been seen.
