The natural areas found throughout New Hampshire are perfect for gaining some clarity through peace and quiet. They’re also a great way to remember just how beautiful the state is. But, hopping in the car to get to the White Mountains isn’t always feasible. That’s why we love this spot in Portsmouth. Located right on the water, it’s perfect for a midday escape without actually escaping.
Prescott Park in Portsmouth graces the city with plentiful flowers and lots of blooming trees in the spring and summer, as well as lovely snowy scenes in the winter.

Willed to the city by lifelong Portsmouth local Josie F. Prescott who wanted to see the industrial waterfront turned into a public park that was free and accessible to everyone.

The Prescott Sisters purchased the waterfront land in the 1930s and willed it to the city in 1954.

The park was a lovely place to enjoy some time outdoors, but things became even more special when the University of New Hampshire was invited to move their All-American Selections Program trial gardens to the park. The program was intended to help study which plants and flowers thrived on the seacoast.

The 10-acre park also includes a riverside lawn, three boardwalk piers, a number of picnic tables and shelters along with grills that visitors can use.

In July and August the annual Prescott Park Arts Festival makes things come even more alive. Enjoy live music performances as well as plays and musicals all outside with the waterfront breeze.

Prescott Park is open 24 hours and is free to enter unless you’re using one of the two public docking facilities.
