Rhode Island is known as the Ocean State, and for good reason. We don’t mean to brag (or do we?), but we all know our beaches are second to none.
In a state as small as Rhody, it isn’t easy to believe that there could be any hidden gems, much less hidden beaches. But there are definitely a few, and Mackerel Cove (also known as Jamestown Town Beach) is certainly one of them. This quiet spot will make you remember why you love life in Rhode Island.
Mackeral Cove is located on the island of Jamestown, sheltered from the currents of Narragansett Bay (and from the crowds).

The fact that this beach stays quiet is no accident – during peak beach season, it’s only open to residents and those holding long-term rentals of 30 days or more.

To reach it, you’ll simply follow a short path over the dunes to the water’s edge.

This beach is a fantastic place for families, especially since the water is so calm and sheltered.

Of course, the often secluded stretches of sand make this an ideal beach for romantic walks with someone special as well.
