You might not see Rhode Island as much of a hiking mecca. But the truth is, the Ocean State has some seriously stunning trails, some of which will make you feel like you’ve left New England entirely. And if you’d prefer your hikes to have a little history, head to the Wolf Hill Forest Preserve, where the World War II Memorial Loop awaits.
The Wolf Hill Forest Preserve runs right through the middle of the town of Smithfield.

In the middle of the trail, you’ll find a sobering memorial from the World War II era.
Amy Wolgast / alltrails.com In 1943, three U.S. Army Air Corps men died when their plane crashed right here in this spot.
But the memorial isn’t the only thing you’ll see on this hike.

It isn’t uncommon to see wildlife on these trails, so keep an eye out.
Travis White / alltrails.com You just might spot wild turkeys, deer, or hawks along the way.
It’s rare to find a hiking trail with so much history in Rhode Island.
Gradon Tripp / alltrails.com Wolf Hill used to be Mowry Farm, and most of the trails are old farm roads.
Have you ever visited Wolf Hill? Your well-behaved leashed dogs are welcome to join you, so the whole family can come along.
