Many battles have been fought in Arizona’s Canyon De Chelly, most involving the Navajo people. Most people who visit the Canyon de Chelly National Monument don’t make it over to the northern part of the canyon, which is aptly called “Canyon del Muerto”. But it was here, in 1825, that an incredibly horrible attack occurred, which likely led to this becoming one of the most haunted places in Arizona. The story is a chilling one.
It’s here, in Massacre Cave, where visitors can still hear the disembodied cries of the Navajo women and children who were killed here nearly two centuries ago.

Canyon del Muerto is located on the northern end of Canyon de Chelly. It’s the lesser-known part of this national monument that is a popular stop for tourists and locals who want to schedule a guided Navajo hike to the Antelope House Ruins that are in a secluded cavern at the base of Canyon de Chelly.

But not many will ask to visit the horrible spot where the 1825 massacre took place. It was here that Spanish soldiers mercilessly slaughtered 25 Navajo women and children without a second thought.

The official word that followed from the Spanish is that they also killed 90 Navajo warriors in the same attack (as if fighting the men somehow justified killing the women and children). However, the Navajo claimed the able-bodied men were all out hunting at the time, making this atrocity a horrible, despicable act that will never be forgotten.
