Maine’s coastal regions get tons of attention. It often feels like every postcard and photo shared across social media includes the rocky coast and waves. We can’t deny that we have one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in America, but what many people from away don’t realize is that our inland waterways and forests are just as special. Hiking or walking along the many trails located miles from the coast offers a peaceful way to explore and today’s featured trail is a great option!

At about 6.5 miles each way, the trail is long, but there are multiple trailheads which means you can access just a portion or the whole thing depending on what you’re looking for.

The route follows the east bank of the Carrabassett River which means that almost all of your time on the trail will come with an incredible view of the river.

The hard crushed stone and dirt make it great for walking or running. And in the winter it’s fantastic for cross-country skiing or other winter activities.

The route is a rail trail which means that it was a track in the past. The original railroad tracks date back to 1894 and were used to transport timber, people and freight.

The Narrow Gauge Pathway can be accessed year-round. Dog are welcome to join in on the fun, but remember to keep them on a leash. Getting to the trailhead requires a short walk from the road.
