If you’re a war history enthusiast, there’s a place in Texas that deserves a top spot on your bucket list. Fort Travis Seashore Park is home to a former World War I and II fort that once housed thousands of troops, and it’s truly an incredible destination.
Repurposed into a waterfront park, Fort Travis served in both World Wars.
TripAdvisor/M J It was completed in 1899 and garrisoned troops defending the Port of Galveston and its approaches during World War I.
By the time World War II rolled around, the fort was much larger.
TripAdvisor/M J It could now hold up to 2,500 troops as well as several types of guns - everything from anti-aircraft to 16-inch-long range rifles.
After the war ended, the fort was dismantled and sold to private interests.
TripAdvisor/M J Today, it belongs to the Galveston County Beach and Parks Department.
Feel free to explore the park at your leisure, admiring the barracks and other structures that have (surprisingly) remained intact after all these years.
TripAdvisor/M J Whether or not you’re a history buff, this place is undeniably worth a visit.
An interpretive trail leads around the park, paralleling the seawall for a brief stretch.
TripAdvisor/St_Matty It’s a history lesson and nature stroll all in one, and you’ll leave a changed person.
Don’t forget to pack a picnic lunch - there are plenty of tables where you can sit down, relax, and take in the views.
TripAdvisor/CraftBeers The park even has showers!
