If you love reading, we’ve got a real treat for you. Vroman’s Bookstore is the oldest and the largest independent bookseller in Southern California. They are a staple of the Pasadena literary scene and have two retail locations as well as a couple of airport boutiques. They don’t only sell books; they also carry puzzles and games, stationery, small gifts, and home decor.

Amazingly, Vroman’s has been around since 1894. The founder, Adam Clark Vroman, was by all accounts an extremely caring man who was passionate about books. He sold his beloved book collection to raise funds to start a bookstore.

When Vroman passed away in 1916, he left his bookstore to longtime employees of the store. One of these employees was the grandfather of the current owner, so it has remained in the family for over a century.

Vroman’s has always strived to continue their founder’s legacy of giving back to the community. During World War II, employees of Vroman’s risked their lives to deliver books to Japanese-American prisoners interned at detainment camps.
