While Door County has plenty of expensive lakeside estates, there’s a million-dollar view waiting for anyone who just happens to have camping reservations. Newport State Park has some stunning lakeside campsites and one of the best is tucked into the far end of a sandy beach, above some dunes overlooking Lake Michigan. Fall asleep to the gentle sound of waves rolling across the sand and wake up to see an orange sun piercing the lake’s horizon. Sound like a dream? The campsite is located at the far end of Newport State Park, a part located in Northern Door County. It’s a Wisconsin state park so you’ll need reservations, and you’ll need a vehicle admission sticker if you drive into the park.

There are a lot of beautiful campsites in this state park but it’s hard to beat campsite 16. It’s located right on the beach, on a narrow isthmus between Europe Lake and Lake Michigan.

The campsites in Newport don’t have a lot of amenities. There’s a pit toilet, a bench or two, a fire ring, and a place for a tent. But what this site does have is simply amazing.

If you’re looking for a place where you can pull in your camper, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Newport State Park’s campsites are backpacking sites, so you’ll have to carry in everything you want to have with you.

The campsite is slightly removed from the beach, in the treeline, so you’ll have some privacy from beachgoers below.

The campsite is a great place to launch a hiking adventure. Trails in the woods will take you to Europe Lake and some great forest vistas.
