In far western Iowa, a rolling hiking trail will lead you to some gorgeous wildflowers. The Chute And Heritage Trail Loop is located about 17 miles northeast of Omaha in the Hitchcock Nature Center. The center includes more than 1,200 acres of rugged and beautiful country that’s laced with some of the best hiking trails in the region.

The Chute and Heritage Trail Loop is a little challenging in spots but it rewards hikers with some great vistas and the chance to get a close look at some delicate wildflowers, as well as some plants and animals found nowhere else in Iowa.

The trail is located in the Loess Hills landform, one of Iowa’s most distinct landscapes. The hills were created by Missouri floodplain silt that was lifted and sculpted by the wind. The terrain is steep in places.
