Nebraska is a beautiful state and we have some really incredible hiking trails. With natural beauty like ours, time spent indoors can feel like time wasted. Why not get out and get some exercise while exploring our stunning surroundings? One trail that makes for a fantastic hike without being too challenging is the Wehrspann Lake Loop trail.
This trail around Wehrspann Lake is located in the amazing Chalco Hills Recreation Area. With almost 1,200 acres to explore, there’s so much to do here.
Robin Whalen/Alltrails The gem of the park is Wehrspann Lake, a 246-acre artificial lake created to assist with flood control. Stocked with a variety of local fish, the lake is extremely popular with fishermen and boaters.
If you take the entire loop around the lake, it’s about six miles in length. It isn’t entirely flat, so there will be some slight elevation throughout.

Even novice hikers shouldn’t find it too challenging. Honestly, you’ll be so distracted by the beauty you see that you probably won’t even notice you are tired!

There are several bridges crossing the lake that you can use to make the path shorter. This is a great option if you’re out with kids or dogs, or just get tired.
