In a small town along the Mississippi River, you’ll find a very old tavern serving up a very delicious sandwich. Monarch Public House is Wisconsin’s oldest continuously-operating tavern and it serves up a wonderful version of a classic American sandwich – the Rueben. The Rueben deliciously melds corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing between grilled slices of rye bread. The Monarch Public House offers much more than this delicious sandwich; it’s also a good excuse to make the drive to Fountain City. Here’s why you won’t be disappointed at the Monarch:

The Monarch Public House first opened in 1894 and some things haven’t changed. The tavern’s ornate, hand-tooled, oak back bar, along with the tables and chairs, have been part of the bar since it opened.

There have been some additions over the years. The public house eventually expanded into a space once occupied by a grocery store. A beer garden was added outside.

The menu has a lot of delicious options, including a pizza crafted with a house-made sauce and butcher-shop-quality meats.

There are plenty of classics, too, including bangers and potato salad, Irish stew, and shepherd’s pie.

But the Rueben is what many customers seek out. The Monarch’s version is simply delicious. If you’re hungry for pizza, the Monarch also has a Rueben pizza!

The atmosphere is not bad either. You might think you’re in Fountain City, Ireland!

Allow plenty of time to soak in the atmosphere of the Monarch – the place has tin ceilings, wood floors and lots of rich woodwork. It’s the perfect place to order a second pint! Once you’ve enjoyed the best Rueben in the state’s oldest tavern, you might consider heading south to Monroe, home of the state’s oldest cheese store.
