Since it is situated in the San Juans, drivers will also be treated to 365-degree bird’s eye views via the 12,620-foot Cinnamon Pass, 12,800-foot Engineer Pass, and 12,650-foot Stony Pass.

Thanks to the area it is in, you are guaranteed to hop on the Byway in a historic mining town and hit many others along the way, including Silverton, Animas Forks, Lake City, and Ouray (pictured).

When you plan your drive, it is recommended that you set aside 2 or more days, as not only is the suggested drive time 7+ hours, but there is plenty to see and do in all of the towns and atop each peak.

Due to rugged terrain and steep inclines, it is recommended that drivers along the Alpine Loop use either a vehicle with 4-wheel drive or an ATV.

Please note: Due to its high elevation, the Alpine Loop is only open late May (or early June, depending on the snow) through early October.
